Selene Station — One Orbit Before Dusk

My wife shoots the mirror key out of my hand.

The sonic round crosses the command chamber before the key completes its fall. Silver metal spins through low gravity, strikes the armored glass, and drifts between us while every alarm in Selene Station begins to howl.

Nova Reyes keeps the pulse rifle trained on my heart.

"Step away from Array Four," she says.

Six years ago, I erased our marriage from the lunar registry to keep the Hegemony from classifying her as property attached to my bloodline. I told myself she would understand after the danger passed.

    The danger never passed.

    Neither did her hatred.

"If I step away," I say, "the primary mirror locks at the wrong angle."

    "You designed the locks."

    "Which is why I know."

Beyond the glass, twelve orbital mirrors turn above the lunar south pole, each wider than a city block. They catch the last sunlight before the fourteen-day night and bend it into Selene’s habitat domes. Fifty thousand vampire-wolf hybrids depend on that false dawn to keep their neural clocks human.

Array Four is already three degrees off course.

On the tactical display, a red shadow lengthens across the colony.

Nova advances. Silver fur traces the powerful line of her forearm where her glove has torn. Her eyes burn crimson around wolf-bright pupils. Dusk is pulling both halves of her hybrid nature toward the surface, and she still holds herself with a commander’s precision.

"Security recorded your authorization at the exterior relay," she says. "Then telemetry died. Give me one reason not to put you through the airlock."

I could tell her Director Vane has spent six years rebuilding the program that made her. I could tell her the Syndicate sent me a live feed of a woman with Nova’s face sleeping inside a weapons cradle. I could tell her Array Four contains the only path to the sealed file.

Instead, I say, "The station recognizes our marriage."

    Her expression becomes lethal.

    "You deleted it."

"Publicly. The original dual-command bond remains in the mirror architecture."

"You built my name into a weapons system without consent?"

"I built a veto no government could remove from you."

    The rifle’s charge rises.

"That sounded better in your head," she says.

    The chamber lights cut out.

Emergency red floods the curved walls. Somewhere below us, thousands of hybrids react at once. The sound travels through Selene’s structure—not quite a howl, more like a breath drawn by an entire population.

My vampire senses sharpen. Nova’s heartbeat becomes the loudest instrument in the room.

    The display changes.

DAWN CYCLE EXTENSION: PLUS SIX HOURS.

    Then twelve.

    Then forty-eight.

    "That’s impossible," Nova says.

"It was impossible when I controlled the network."

    "You still do."

"No." I point to the authorization string beneath the extension. "That is your genetic signature."

She does not lower the rifle. "I’ve never accessed solar command."

    "Someone with your blood has."

The hidden message from Vane arrives on my private lens.

OPEN ARRAY FOUR OR WATCH HER PACK BECOME ANIMALS.

Below it, the sleeping woman opens her eyes.

    Nova’s eyes.

I close the feed before my wife can see it.

The first impact hits the chamber doors. Security officers shout from the corridor, demanding entry under Hegemony authority. Nova looks toward the sound, then back at me.

    "They arrived quickly," she says.

    "Too quickly."

    "You invited them."

    "I invited you."

That stops her for half a heartbeat.

I push away from the console and catch the drifting mirror key. The key has two grips, silver on one side and black on the other. It will turn only when our biometrics engage together.

"Array Four holds evidence of who extended the night," I say. "But the exterior manual lock must be opened before dusk."

    "How long?"

    "Thirty-seven minutes."

The station shudders. On the population monitor, hybrid aggression markers climb. Yellow. Orange. Red.

Nova lowers the rifle two centimeters. "If this is another attempt to control me—"

"Then use the veto I gave you and burn my access out of the mirrors."

    "Gladly."

She reaches for the silver grip.

The command chamber reads our palms. A collar of light forms briefly around each of our throats—the visual signature of dual command. Nova flinches at the symbol but does not release the key.

Our old marriage record appears between us.

ADRIAN SABLE. NOVA REYES. LEGAL STATUS: SEALED. COMMAND RIGHTS: EQUAL.

For six years, she believed I erased us completely.

For six years, I let her.

"After this," she says, voice rough, "you explain every line."

    "If we survive dusk."

The chamber door begins to buckle.

Nova rips the black half of the key from my hand and locks it to her belt. "You’re not coming outside. Security will assume you’re the saboteur."

    "I am the architect."

    "Exactly."

She turns toward the EVA corridor.

My private lens flashes again. The woman with Nova’s face is no longer in the cradle. A tracking icon moves toward Airlock Three.

If I warn Nova, she will hunt the clone before we recover the evidence. If I remain silent, she will find the intruder at Array Four and believe it is me.

Vane has designed the choice perfectly.

I take the duplicate mirror key from beneath the console.

    "Nova."

    She looks back.

There are a thousand apologies inside me and no version she would accept while alarms are sounding.

"Do not trust anyone wearing your face," I say.

Her gaze hardens. "I stopped trusting yours years ago."

    The door seals between us.

I enter the maintenance shaft and climb toward the exterior relay while she arms for patrol. Above Selene, the final natural sunlight thins to a red blade. Below, fifty thousand hybrids begin to dream of hunting.

At Airlock Three, an unregistered shuttle clamps to the station.

I have one orbit to restore dawn, expose a ghost with my wife’s blood, and convince Nova that deleting our marriage was the most faithful betrayal I knew how to commit.

    Outside, Array Four goes dark.
