Nikolai
The silence stretches, heavy and agonizing in the crimson glow of the study.
I watch the truth shatter the fragile architecture of her world. The Makarov pistol trembles in Anya’s grip, pressed directly over my heart. She is processing the ultimate betrayal, realizing the savior she mourned for three years was the very monster who sold her to the highest bidder in Macau.
Her finger twitches on the trigger. I do not move. If the pain of the truth demands my blood, I will let her take it.
But before she can make the choice, the reinforced glass of the study windows obliterates.
A concussive shockwave of heat and expanding air throws us both violently to the hardwood floor. Deafening alarms immediately sever the quiet night, shrieking through the estate. Gunfire erupts from the east lawn—the heavy, rhythmic thud of assault rifles. My earpiece crackles to life with Viktor’s frantic voice. Petrov loyalists. Two heavily armed squads. They breached the perimeter. Boss, they are in the house.
My own survival doesn’t even register as a priority. The only mathematics my brain processes in the chaos is the proximity of the flying glass to Anya.
I scramble to my feet, the cold, lethal logic of the pakhan reasserting control. I draw my backup weapon from my ankle holster. Two men in dark tactical gear burst through the shattered mahogany doors of the study. I don’t hesitate. I put two hollow-point rounds into the first man’s throat and a third through the visor of the second before they can even raise their weapons. They drop heavily onto the Persian rug.
"Get up!" I roar over the deafening crack of incoming fire, grabbing Anya by the shoulder and dragging her behind the heavy oak desk.
Anya
The blast rings in my ears, turning the world into a muted, high-pitched void.
Thick smoke and the sharp smell of sulfur choke the study. I push myself up, my palms sliding on shattered glass and spilled whiskey. The heavy leather ledger lies three feet away, dusted with debris. The Makarov pistol is still gripped tightly in my right hand.
Gunshots echo fiercely down the hallway. My uncle’s men. They didn’t come to rescue a captive bride. They came for the ledger, and they will slaughter anyone in this room to secure my father’s stolen empire.
Nikolai is a terrifying force of nature above me, returning fire into the corridor with ruthless precision. The exit to the hidden servant’s stairwell is clear just behind the bookshelves. I could grab the book and run. I could disappear into the chaos of the night.
But I look at the broad span of Nikolai’s back as he stands between me and the storm of bullets. The man who just stripped away my most devastating illusion is the only person actually fighting to keep me breathing.
Nikolai
The hallway is swarming. We are pinned in the study, and I am running out of ammunition.
I eject the spent magazine and slam a fresh one home, ducking as a spray of bullets shreds the books lining the walls behind me. I glance down at Anya. She is frozen, staring at the leather ledger resting in the debris.
"Leave it!" I shout, the command tearing through my throat.
I reach down and rip the velcro straps of my Kevlar tactical vest. I shed the heavy ceramic plates, leaving my chest completely unprotected in the crossfire, and lunge toward her. I drag her up by the shoulders, forcing the vest over her head and securing it tight against her ribs.
She looks up at me, her icy blue eyes wide with shock.
"If they breach this room, you do not stop running," I command, my hands gripping her face, smearing my blood across her pale cheek. "You shoot anything that moves and you do not look back. Do you understand me?"
I do not wait for her answer. I turn back to the doorway, stepping out from the cover of the desk to draw the concentrated fire away from her position.
Anya
The heavy Kevlar smells of his sweat and gunpowder. It presses against my chest, an impenetrable shield. He gave me his armor. He is giving me his life.
Through the thick, acrid smoke, a shadow detaches from the wall behind Nikolai’s left shoulder.
I recognize the face instantly. It is my uncle, stepping into the study with a suppressed submachine gun raised. He is aiming directly for the center of Nikolai’s unprotected spine.
The ledger is right at my feet. It is leverage. It is vengeance. It is the power to rebuild my entire life.
I kick the heavy leather book aside.
I raise the Makarov with both hands, locking my elbows exactly as I was taught, and pull the trigger.
The recoil snaps my wrists. My uncle’s head jerks back, a red mist blooming in the air behind him before his knees buckle. He crumples to the floor, dead before he hits the hardwood.
Nikolai whips around, his gun raised, only to see the body of the man I just killed to protect his blind spot. Our eyes meet through the smoke. The transaction is absolute. We are no longer captor and captive. We are accomplices, bound by the blood on our hands and the bodies at our feet.
Nikolai
She chose me.
The realization is a sharp, blinding spike of adrenaline, hotter than the fire consuming the east wing. Anya Petrov just severed the last remaining tie to her bloodline to guard my back.
"Move!" I yell, grabbing her hand to drag her toward the reinforced panic room behind the bookshelves.
But a chaotic, desperate spray of machine-gun fire from the lawn tears through the remaining window frames. A staccato burst of high-caliber rounds shreds the mahogany desk. I see the trajectory before I hear the shots.
I don’t think. I throw my body across the space, tackling Anya to the floor just as the air violently fractures.
A sledgehammer impact crashes into my side, tearing through muscle, breaking ribs, and exiting through my back. The world tilts into violent, blinding white. I crash onto the hardwood, my lungs seizing as the hot, metallic taste of copper floods my mouth.
I collapse onto the ruined Persian rug in a rapidly spreading pool of my own blood. The chaotic noise of the gunfight fades into a dark, suffocating static. I can’t breathe. I can’t move. But as the terrifying darkness threatens to swallow me entirely, my bloody hand blindly sweeps the floor until it finds her wrist, my fingers locking around her racing pulse in an iron grip that not even death will be permitted to break.
