Where forbidden tales are told.

The impact of Kieran’s hips driving into mine snaps my head back against the damp, acoustic tiles of the bathhouse wall.

There is no preamble, no gentle easing into this. We stripped our hostility at the door along with our clothes, leaving our titles and our packs outside the brass-reinforced threshold. Here, in the heavy, sulfur-laced steam of the neutral zone, there are only two bodies entirely consumed by the friction of skin on skin, slick with sweat and condensation.

He pulls my leg higher, hooking my knee over his thick forearm to open me wider. The angle is sharp, demanding. I dig my fingernails into his broad, scarred shoulders, anchoring myself as he thrusts upward. A jagged breath tears through his throat, raw and utterly human.

“Tell me if it’s too much,” Kieran grates, his voice a low vibration against my collarbone. His chest heaves against my breasts, hot and solid.

“It’s not,” I gasp, my hips rolling forward to meet his next strike. “Don’t you dare slow down, Vale.”

He doesn’t. He takes the command—the only kind of command allowed in this room—and answers it with a relentless, bruising rhythm that sends a shockwave of heat straight to my core. I tighten around him, and a ragged groan vibrates in his chest. His human teeth scrape against the sensitive skin of my neck, grazing the pulse point. The instinct to flinch, to bare my own throat in challenge, flares hot in my blood, but he doesn’t bite down. He doesn’t mark.

That was the first rule of the truce. No fangs. No pack-commands. No shifting. For one hour, we are strictly, exclusively human. Two thirty-year-old adults who have spent the last half-decade staring at each other across bloody borders and diplomatic tables, deciding to finally carve out the tension that has been suffocating us both.

He pulls back just enough to look at me. Kieran’s eyes are a striking, glacial blue, currently blown wide and dilated black with pure lust. The harsh lighting of the subterranean bathhouse casts deep shadows over the planes of his face, emphasizing the sharp cut of his jaw and the jagged pale scar cutting through his left eyebrow—a scar my second-in-command gave him four winters ago.

Right now, that history means nothing. His large hands span my waist, his thumbs pressing hard into the dip of my stomach as he sets a punishing, desperate pace. The water from the overhead pipes drips down his dark hair, splashing onto my heated skin. Every slide of his body inside mine is a friction burn of pleasure, wiping away the exhaustion of the summit, the weight of my pack, the endless, grinding strategy of being an Alpha.

“You’re holding back, Sable,” he murmurs, his hips stuttering on a half-thrust before driving deep, hitting a spot that makes my vision white out.

My breath hitches. I squeeze my eyes shut, my jaw locking tight.

“Look at me,” he demands, his tone stripped of a rival Alpha’s authority, leaving only the raw plea of a man who wants all of his partner. He slows the pace, dragging himself out to the very tip before sinking back in with agonizing deliberation. “Look at me.”

I force my eyes open. The pleasure is building into a suffocating pressure in my lower stomach, a coiled spring ready to snap.

“We have forty minutes left on the glass,” Kieran whispers, his mouth hovering over mine, his breath mingling with my own. The hourglass sits on the marble bench across the room, the sand sifting down in absolute silence. The bathhouse is built from moon-glass and sound-swallowing stone, designed so that rival packs can negotiate without their words bleeding through the walls. It absorbs everything. “You don’t have to control this. Let it go.”

He shifts his grip, sliding one hand from my waist up to cup my jaw, his thumb tracing the tight line of my lips. He thrusts up, hard, and the pleasure spikes so sharply I almost break.

A sound claws its way up my throat. I swallow it down with a taste of blood, biting the inside of my cheek.

My mother’s face flashes behind my eyelids. The execution square. The blinding winter sun. I was fifteen, forced to stand at the edge of the dais while she stood over a traitor. I had wanted to scream for mercy, to beg her to stop. But she had looked at me, smiled, and when she gave the order to drop the blade, the voice that echoed off the stone courtyard wasn’t hers. It was mine. She had stolen the pitch, the cadence, the exact tremor of my vocal cords, weaponizing my own sound to order a death.

Control your voice, Sable, she had told me later, wiping blood from her boots. Or someone else will use it.

I haven’t made a sound I didn’t calculate since that day. Not in battle. Not in pain. And definitely not in pleasure. To vocalize is to give a piece of myself away, to offer a frequency that can be mapped, copied, and used.

Kieran watches the shadow cross my face, feeling the sudden, rigid tension in my spine. He doesn’t ask. He has his own ghosts; a man whose father chained him to a strategy table until he ordered a slaughter knows what it looks like when the past bleeds into the present.

“Okay,” Kieran says softly, his blue eyes softening with an understanding that terrifies me more than his violence ever could. “You don’t have to speak. You don’t have to scream. Just breathe with me. Give me your breath.”

He presses his mouth to mine, not for a kiss, but to share the air.

He shifts his angle, aligning our bodies perfectly. He reaches down between us, his calloused fingers finding the slick, swollen bundle of nerves at my center. The moment he touches me, the world narrows to a pinpoint.

“Breathe, Sable,” he commands against my lips, his thumb circling, pressing, rubbing in time with his deep, heavy thrusts.

I gasp, inhaling his air, exhaling mine into his mouth. The rhythm of his fingers is relentless, perfectly matched to the driving force of his hips. The friction is a live wire, sparking and snapping through my nervous system. I grip his hair, pulling him closer, my nails digging into his scalp.

“Yes,” I manage to choke out, the word barely a rush of air. “Kieran, don’t stop. Right there. Just like that.”

“I’ve got you,” he rasps, his own control fraying. His muscles are corded tight, slick with sweat. He drives into me with a desperate, heavy rhythm, entirely focused on my pleasure.

The pressure in my stomach coils tighter, hotter, burning through the last of my defenses. I can feel the edge approaching, a terrifying, beautiful drop. I want to fight it. I want to hold on to the rigid control that keeps me safe.

But Kieran’s thumb presses down, his hips driving up in one continuous, shattering motion, and the ledge crumbles.

    I break.

The climax hits me like a physical blow. My body arches off the tiles, a silent, open-mouthed gasp tearing from my lungs. My muscles spasm violently around him, milking him, drawing him deeper. The pleasure is absolute, an obliterating wave of heat and light that strips away the Alpha, the strategist, the survivor, leaving only the raw, trembling core of a woman.

Kieran groans into my mouth, his body locking up. He drives into me one final, devastating time, holding himself deep as his own climax rips through him. His chest bows, his heart hammering a frantic, violent beat against my ribs.

We hang there, suspended in the heavy steam, our bodies fused together, shaking through the aftershocks. The only sound in the room is our ragged, synchronized breathing.

He slowly lowers my leg, taking my weight against his body so I don’t collapse against the wet wall. He rests his forehead against mine, his eyes closed, his breathing slowly finding an even cadence.

I keep my eyes closed, letting the reality of what just happened settle into my bones. For twenty minutes, I wasn’t the leader of the Hart pack. I wasn’t the woman who had to calculate every syllable. I was just Sable, and he was just Kieran.

He withdraws slowly, his hands instantly catching my hips to steady me. The cool air of the bathhouse hits my heated skin, making me shiver. Kieran reaches for a thick, white towel hanging on a nearby hook and wraps it around my shoulders, pulling the edges together over my chest.

“Are you cold?” he asks, his voice thick and rough.

“No,” I say, opening my eyes. “I’m fine.”

He looks at me, really looks at me, his gaze sweeping over my flushed face, the damp hair clinging to my neck, the towel wrapped defensively around my body. There is no triumph in his eyes, no smug satisfaction of an enemy conquering a rival. There is only a quiet, heavy intimacy that feels far more dangerous than the sex.

He steps back, grabbing a towel for himself and wrapping it around his waist. He walks over to the small marble basin, turning the brass tap. The water runs clear and cold. He splashes it over his face, washing away the sweat.

I lean against the tiled wall, pulling the towel tighter around myself. The hourglass on the bench shows only ten minutes left. Ten minutes until the truce expires. Ten minutes until we have to walk out of this room, put on our leathers, and go back to being enemies.

“The summit starts at dawn,” Kieran says, staring at the running water. He doesn’t look at me. “Your council is going to demand the northern ridges. My father’s generals won’t yield them.”

“Then we fight,” I say, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

He turns off the tap. “We don’t have to.”

“Kieran.” I use his first name, a breach of protocol that feels heavier than taking off my clothes. “We can’t solve a border war in a neutral bathhouse.”

“We solved something,” he says quietly, turning to face me. He crosses the room, stopping inches away. He reaches out, his knuckles brushing against my damp cheek. The touch is infinitely gentle, a stark contrast to the bruising force of his hands minutes ago. “Didn’t we?”

I look up into his glacial eyes, feeling the terrifying urge to lean into his palm. To stay in this room, to let the hourglass run out, to let the world outside burn.

Before I can answer, the room vibrates.

It isn’t a physical tremor. It is an acoustic anomaly. The sound-swallowing tiles lining the walls seem to hum, a low, resonant frequency that makes my teeth ache.

Kieran drops his hand, his body instantly shifting from a lover back into a warrior. He steps in front of me, putting his broad back between me and the door, his eyes scanning the empty, steam-filled room.

“What is that?” he asks, his voice sharp.

“The acoustic dampeners,” I say, my heart rate spiking. “They’re… they’re reversing.”

Instead of absorbing sound, the moon-glass tiles are projecting it.

A high, breathless gasp echoes off the walls.

I freeze. My blood turns to ice.

It’s the sound I made when Kieran first touched me.

    “Yes. Kieran, don’t stop.”

The recording is crystal clear, perfectly captured, amplified through the acoustic architecture of the room. It plays back my vulnerability, my loss of control, bouncing off the damp tiles.

Kieran spins around, looking at the ceiling, looking for the source. “Who the fuck—”

    “Right there. Just like that.”

I feel sick. Someone recorded us. Someone breached a neutral zone, bypassed the acoustic locks, and stole the most private, vulnerable moment of my life.

    But it gets worse.

The audio shifts. The breathless moans, the gasps, the heavy, synchronized breathing—they are being chopped, spliced, rearranged. The pitch drops, the cadence alters.

I watch in absolute horror as the sound of my own pleasure is reconstructed, forged into a new sequence, building a sentence I never spoke.

The hum of the tiles reaches a crescendo, and then a howl erupts from the walls.

It is my voice. Unmistakably, perfectly mine. But it is not a gasp of pleasure. It is the deep, commanding roar of an Alpha issuing a pack-command.

“The truce is broken. Vale blood on the snow. Kill them all at dawn.”

The command echoes through the bathhouse, deafening and absolute. It isn’t just playing in this room. The acoustic magic of the walls is projecting it outward, amplifying it across the neutral zone, across the borders, straight into the ears of every wolf in both our packs.

Kieran turns to look at me, his face pale, his eyes wide with a horrific realization.

The voice is mine, and it has just ordered forty thousand wolves to war. <!– GEMSTORY:END chapter=1 –>
