The derelict dreadnought Aegis is a ghost of rusted iron and silent cannons, drifting blindly through the static-charged mist of the cloud graveyard. At the helm, Rovan stands in the shape of a man.

I watch the heavy muscles in his broad back shift beneath his rain-soaked shirt as he forces the massive brass steering wheel to port. He is tall, lethal, and entirely human. But the raw, weeping circular burns wrapping around his throat—the permanent brand of the iron bridle—mark him as the monster the empire tried to break. Without the saddle, without the command-runes, the silence between us is vast and entirely lawless. We are two traitors standing on a stolen warship, hiding in the upper atmosphere.

The deck shudders violently. The atmospheric gauge on the binnacle screams.

Above us, the cloud ceiling tears open. A jagged, mile-wide fragment of a civilian sector—thousands of tons of limestone and residential foundations—is in free-fall, raining crushed rock into the abyss.

The mathematics of the empire is a lie, and I am going to prove it.

I do not wait for a command. There are no runes to force my hands. There is only the falling stone and the woman standing beside me. The Aegis possesses a dead-iron hull heavy enough to rival a mountain. I kick the release lever of the primary harpoon anchors. The massive steel cables shriek as they fire upward, burying their spiked heads deep into the plummeting bedrock of the island.

The slack vanishes in a heartbeat. I wrap my arms around the main winch, bracing my heavy boots against the deck planks, locking every cord of muscle in my back to take the catastrophic force of the deceleration.

Beside me, Ysra does not flinch. She drops to her knees, driving her glass-tipped needle straight into the iron deck. Her good right hand pulls a thick, volatile thread of raw gravity from the falling island, stitching its lethal momentum directly into the mass of the warship. She does not ask for my draconic strength; she matches it with her own breaking bones.

The kinetic shockwave hits. The deck groans, the iron bending under our boots. But the cables hold.

    The island stops falling.

It hangs suspended in the storm, anchored entirely by dead iron and her gravity, not by the blood of my kind.

The silence that follows is heavier than the thunder.

The massive shadow of the suspended island hangs safely above our masts. We are alone on the flooded deck, the freezing rain washing the white limestone dust from our clothes. Rovan’s breath comes in ragged, heavy pants. He lets go of the winch, collapsing back against the rusted bulkhead, his silver eyes tracking me as I push myself up.

The burns on his neck are bleeding freely now, the electrified, silver-tinged blood glowing faintly in the dim light.

I do not speak. I close the distance between us. My left glass arm hangs uselessly at my side, but my right hand reaches out. I press my trembling fingers gently against the ruined, weeping flesh of his throat.

    He goes perfectly, terrifyingly still.

Her touch is a spark thrown into a powder magazine.

I have been chained, starved, and bled for decades, but nothing has ever dismantled my defenses as violently as the soft, deliberate pressure of her thumb against my racing pulse. She is not holding a leash. She is only holding me.

I reach up, wrapping my large hand around the back of her neck, my thumb tangling in her wet hair, and I pull her hard against my chest. She gasps, a sharp intake of breath that I swallow completely as I bring my mouth down on hers.

It is not a gentle kiss. It is a collision of survival and absolute, starving desperation. She tastes like ozone, limestone dust, and pure defiance. She opens for me instantly, her right hand gripping the front of my torn shirt, anchoring herself to me as if I am the only solid thing left in the sky. The heat of her mouth burns away the freezing rain, erasing the cold of the iron deck.

I melt into the crushing heat of him.

His hands are everywhere, rough and frantic, pushing the heavy, soaked fabric of my military jacket off my shoulders. The freezing wind bites my bare skin for only a second before the scorching heat of his palms replaces it, sliding up my ribs, pulling me flush against his rigid body. The slide of his tongue against mine is deep and completely possessive, a silent, ravenous demand that I answer with equal hunger.

He pulls me into his lap, his thighs hard as stone beneath me. I press my lips to the hollow of his collarbone, tracing the jagged edge of his scars with my mouth, wanting to overwrite every mark the empire left on him with my own touch. He groans—a deep, inhuman vibration that rattles my spine—his hands shifting down to grip my hips, pulling me exactly where he needs me. The world outside the warship simply ceases to exist. The only reality is the friction of his body against mine, the heavy, desperate rhythm of his breath in my ear.

Then, a sound echoes from beneath the iron deck.

It is not the creaking of the anchor cables. It is a heavy, rhythmic thud echoing from the warship’s sealed lower cargo vault. A deliberate, metallic scraping of a heavy door being forced open from the inside.

Rovan freezes, his lips hovering an inch from my neck, the breath catching in his throat.
