The descent into the core of Oakhaven is a suffocating crawl through the dark.

This is my home. The island where I was born, the civilian sector I swore to protect. Now, moving through its subterranean maintenance shafts, the air pressure compresses my lungs until every breath is a shallow, ragged gasp. The limestone walls sweat with condensation and the metallic tang of old iron. My pulse hammers a frantic, deafening rhythm against my eardrums, syncing with the dull throb in my hollowed left arm.

I press my good hand against the heavy steel of the final blast door. The gravity-locks built into the frame are imperial grade, designed to crush the bones of anyone trying to force them. I don’t force them. I pull a microscopic thread of gravity from the surrounding bedrock, weaving it through the tumblers, hollowing the density of the deadbolts until they slide back with a soft, yielding click.

    The heavy door swings open.

The light inside is not the warm, golden sun of the sky-islands. It is a sickly, luminescent violet. The air smells of ozone and decay. I step over the threshold, and the sheer scale of the cavern steals the rest of my breath.

The empire is a machine built on a graveyard.

I step past the human woman into the cavernous expanse of the anchor vault. Suspended from the vaulted ceiling are hundreds of massive cages forged from cold iron. Inside each cage, floating in a localized stasis field, is a single, iridescent feather. A heart-scale. They stretch into the darkness, row upon row of them, pulsing with the harvested, dying light of my kind.

The arithmetic of subjugation is laid bare before me. I can feel the ambient hum of the scales vibrating in my teeth. This is not just a power source holding a city in the sky. It is a monument to slaughter.

Every cage is wired directly into the limestone bedrock, siphoning the raw buoyancy from the dead scales to keep the stone afloat. The silence in this room is heavier than the storm outside. It is the silence of a thousand severed wings. I walk down the central aisle, my boots echoing against the iron grating. I do not look at Ysra. I cannot look at her, or the blood-rage will eclipse the cold, perfect clarity of what I have come here to do.

I follow him down the aisle, the violet light casting long, distorted shadows across his broad back.

He stops in front of a central cage. I step up beside him, my eyes tracking the surface of the massive obsidian scale trapped within. It is nearly identical to the feathers that line his draconic form, but it bears a distinct, jagged striation of silver near the quill—a genetic marker, naturally calcified into the keratin.

A cold spike of dread drives itself directly into my spine.

    I know that silver mark.

I have traced it a hundred times with my own fingertips. Not on a living dragon, but on the parchment of the leather-bound journals sitting on my father’s desk. My father, the esteemed surveyor of the outer rings. The pioneer who anchored Oakhaven and made it a haven for our people. His notebooks were filled with precise charcoal sketches of these exact striations, accompanied by coordinates and harvest yields.

He wasn’t an explorer. He was a poacher.

He didn’t find the islands; he built them by hunting the storm. Every island in this sector, my entire life, my home, the people I have broken my own bones to save—we are all floating on the butchered remains of Rovan’s family line.

The pieces of my history snap together with the sickening crunch of falling stone. I stumble backward, my right hand gripping my chest. I look at Rovan, waiting for the horror to register on his face.

But his face is perfectly, terrifyingly blank.

I watch the realization hit her. The exact moment the foundation of her entire world turns to ash in her mouth.

"You knew," she whispers, her voice cracking, barely audible over the hum of the vault.

"I knew the name Vale from the moment they read the military docket on the tarmac," I say. My voice is flat, devoid of the heat that burned between us on the Aegis. "Your father wiped out the northern aeries to build this city. I knew exactly whose blood was keeping this rock in the sky."

She takes another step back, her eyes wide, searching my face for the man who pulled her against his chest in the freezing rain. She won’t find him.

"You broke the command-rune," I tell her, the truth finally, cleanly unsheathed. "But a dragon cannot breach an imperial gravity-lock without shattering the scales inside. I needed a stitcher to open the door to the vault. I needed you."

I watch the memory of our intimacy recode itself in her eyes. Every touch, every surrendered breath, every moment of shared vulnerability on the abandoned warship. She reads it all backward, seeing it for exactly what it had to be: the calculated, necessary price of admission to the heart of her empire. I used her desperation against her. I turned her mercy into a key.

The betrayal is absolute. It leaves no room to breathe.

I am standing in the tomb my father built, looking at the monster I freed, and I realize I have engineered the destruction of my own home. I was never a partner. I was a tool.

"Rovan," I choke out, my hand drifting instinctively toward my stitching needle, though I have no hollow bone left to give. "Please."

He doesn’t reach for me. He doesn’t strike me.

He turns his back on me entirely. He walks toward the massive, primary load-bearing strut that tethers the entire network of cages to the island’s bedrock.

The reversal shifts the gravity in the room before he even touches the iron. He didn’t come here to reclaim his family’s scales. He didn’t come here to save my home from falling.

He wraps his large, scarred hands around the central release lever of the anchor system. He looks back at me over his shoulder, his silver eyes cold and dead.

He came here to drop the island into the star-sea.
