The sky above Oakhaven is no longer empty. It is crowded with the rusted, colossal hulls of the decommissioned imperial fleet.

I lean against the limestone balcony of our newly built aerie, watching the massive steel cables pull taut against the dreadnoughts floating in the upper atmosphere. The arithmetic of the world has been entirely rewritten. We do not harvest heart-scales anymore. We stitch the ambient gravity of the storm directly into the dead iron of the warships, using their massive displacement to counter the weight of the cities below. It is a fragile, exhausting system, requiring dozens of stitchers working in endless shifts, but it is a system built on sweat, physics, and consent. Not slaughter.

The imperial military paradigm collapsed the day the outer rings realized the dragons could simply choose not to catch them.

The anchor vaults beneath the city are dead.

I walked through the subterranean caverns this morning. The heavy iron cages are twisted and crushed, the stasis fields permanently dark. The stolen scales of my ancestors have all been unclasped and dropped into the star-sea, returned to the churning abyss where they belong. The island of Oakhaven remains suspended, not by the harvested blood of my kin, but by the heavy, groaning iron of the human fleet tethered above.

The cycle of the falling sky, the terror that defined both our lives from the very beginning, has finally broken. The world did not end when the empire’s lies fell apart; it simply had to learn how to carry its own weight.

The articulated steel brace locked around my right thigh whirs with a quiet, mechanical click as I shift my stance on the balcony.

The bone beneath the leather strapping is completely hollowed into brittle glass, a permanent, agonizing receipt for the mass I transferred to the Aegis. I cannot walk unassisted, and the cold air aches deep in the fragile marrow. But then Rovan’s large, calloused hands wrap around my waist from behind.

He pulls me back against his broad, solid chest. His heat bleeds through my coat, heavy and absolute. He buries his face in the crook of my neck, his breath ghosting over my skin, smelling of rain and warm earth. There is no heavy leather saddle between us. There is no iron bridle demanding obedience. Just the raw, grounding friction of his body against mine, tethering me entirely to the limestone beneath my boots.

I lean my weight back into him, and his arms tighten, taking the burden from my shattered leg without a single word spoken.

My thumb traces the thick, ridged scars circling my throat.

The iron bands are gone, but the burn marks will never fade. I remember the paralyzing, suffocating weight of the command-runes on the military tarmac. The sheer, feral desperation to bathe the world in lightning just to escape the collar. The instinct to view every human hand as a threat to be eradicated.

Now, the wind bites at my human skin, and there is only quiet. I sacrificed my master scale to the bedrock of this island. Without it, my draconic form is permanently grounded; the magic in my blood can no longer generate the sheer force required to lift my true weight. I will never spread obsidian feathers against the storm again. I traded the sky for the dirt.

But holding the woman resting softly against my chest, feeling the steady, unforced rhythm of her heartbeat against my forearms, I know the truth. I have never been more free.

We stand at the shattered edge of the perimeter, where the island meets the eternal drop of the star-sea.

Laid out on the stone before us is a massive, meticulously crafted wing of reinforced ship-canvas and lightweight aluminum strutting. I cannot stitch enough gravity to lift an island anymore, and he can no longer take the shape of a storm. But I can weave just enough localized buoyancy into the canvas to catch the stratospheric thermals, and he has the sheer physical strength to pilot the frame.

Rovan steps into the heavy leather harness, his silver-flecked eyes catching the sunlight, and holds out his hand to me.

I take it, locking my braced leg into the tandem stirrup, pressing my chest flush against his back. We do not wait for a military command. We do not calculate the toll of an empire. We step off the edge of the world together. The canvas snaps taut above us, catching the updraft, and for the first time in our lives, the flight is entirely our own.
