Where forbidden tales are told.

The star-iron screeches, a sound that vibrates through the marrow of my bones.

The blast doors sealing our maintenance chamber were forged to withstand the tectonic crushing of continents. Now, they are bowing inward, the thick metal groaning under an impossible kinetic load. The glowing center of the chamber, where Leandros and I lie tangled in discarded leather, drops ten degrees in a single second.

I scramble to my feet, my human hands blindly grabbing for my trousers and my discarded sword belt.

This is not a system failure. This is an organized assault. The venting of the fourth stratum didn’t just release the pressure; it removed the ceiling holding back the deepest primordial layer. The core lock is a zero-sum game, and by choosing to unlock the prison, I have handed the initiative entirely to the things buried in the dark.

A massive, concussive impact strikes the outer hull of the chamber.

The star-iron cracks. A fissure of blinding, orange magma-light splits the wall. Through the widening gap, I do not see the random chaos of a collapsing cavern. I see colossal, shifting shadows—the Titans, fully awakened, coordinating their upward surge against the exposed underbelly of the hanging islands. If they breach the upper strata, the floating rocks holding the remnants of humanity will be atomized in the crossfire.

"Get up," I say, my voice stripping away the heavy, intimate warmth of the last hour. I buckle my breastplate over my bare chest, the cold iron biting into my skin.

Leandros is already moving, pulling his ash-stained harness over his shoulders, his eyes tracking the structural failure of the doors. He doesn’t panic. He calculates. But the equation has changed.

The massive blast doors finally peel apart like torn paper.

A hurricane of sulfur and blinding heat rushes into the spherical room. I throw my arm up to shield my eyes, coughing on the oxidized blood-scent of the deep abyss. Beyond the torn metal, the entire architecture of Tartarus is rearranging itself.

The central magma vent has widened into a churning ocean. Above it, the massive bronze gears we bypassed earlier are spinning at a terrifying, lethal velocity. But they are no longer just grinding against each other.

The gears are aligning into a pattern.

I step closer to the edge of the shattered floor, my pulse hammering in my throat. I trace the vector lines of the descending bronze pendulums, the shifting, fleshy tendons of the abyss walls, the interlocking rings of star-iron snapping into place around the magma vent. The chaos is entirely deliberate. It is forming a massive, planetary-scale geometric funnel.

    It is my design.

The breath punches out of my lungs. The shifting corridors. The dead ends that funnel kinetic pressure inward. The killing paths. It is the exact, unholy labyrinth I was forced to draw for the surface rebellion, scaled up to the size of a world, weaponized to grind anything caught inside it into ash.

I turn back to Theron, the realization a physical blow to my ribs. "That isn’t a cage holding them down. It’s an execution chamber."

    He sees it.

I watch the horror bloom in Leandros’s eyes as he recognizes his own monstrous blueprint etched into the floor of hell. The weapon is arming itself. The kinetic feedback from the Titans’ upward surge is being caught by the labyrinth’s geometry, turning their own massive strength into a grinding, mechanized meat-grinder that will rip them apart.

But a weapon of this magnitude requires an anchor. It requires a Warden.

"Stay behind me," I say, my voice flattening into the sterile, unfeeling register I have used for a thousand years.

I close my eyes and reach into the ether. The nine remaining phantom arms of pale, glowing marble tear their way out of my shoulders and spine. The cold is instantaneous, paralyzing, flooding my human veins with the absolute authority of the Hecatoncheires. I do not look back at Leandros. I cannot afford to look at him.

I step into the roaring updraft at the edge of the shattered floor. My nine spectral hands stretch outward, elongating across the cavern, and plunge directly into the spinning central gears of the weaponized labyrinth.

The connection locks. Millions of tons of grinding bronze and primordial tension violently link directly to my nervous system. I am no longer a man who just surrendered his power on the floor of a sealed room. I am the executioner of Olympus, plugging myself back into the grid, prioritizing the survival of the empire over the fragile, mortal intimacy I just claimed. I withdraw my protection from him to shield the world.

The pale marble hands glow with blinding intensity. Theron’s human body goes rigid, suspended at the edge of the abyss, commanding the machine that is tearing the Titans to shreds below us.

He didn’t hesitate. He put the crown back on the second the walls cracked.

I stare at his back, standing alone in the ash. A sickening, freezing clarity floods my mind, forcing every interaction we have had since I fell onto his island into a brutal new alignment.

You will redraw the containment lines, he had said.

He didn’t bring me down here to fix the walls. He knew the walls were already failing. He brought me down here because this genocidal machine is based on my own schematics, and only the original architect could identify the master override.

The obsidian key. The choice he handed me.

My stomach heaves. The core lock didn’t just vent the pressure. It was the safety catch. By turning the key, I didn’t save the islands; I armed the slaughterhouse. And Theron couldn’t turn it himself. The magic of the abyss demanded that the creator of the labyrinth be the one to open its throat. He needed me to do it willingly.

Every word of banter. Every concession. The moment he stripped off his phantom hands and declared me a free man. It wasn’t surrender. It was the final, perfectly calibrated manipulation to get me to turn the key. He used the one thing I was desperate for—my agency—to turn me into the ultimate weapon. I am still just a tool in his hand.

The screaming of the Titans reverberates up my spectral arms, threatening to shatter my mind. The weapon is working. The labyrinth is grinding the primordial threat into dust, saving the hanging islands above from immediate destruction.

But the kinetic feedback loop is too massive.

My phantom hands are holding the gears, but the shockwaves are traveling up the bronze tethers. I can feel the fault lines in the surface islands snapping. The weapon will kill the Titans, but the reverberations will shake the remnants of humanity off the floating rocks and into the magma.

There is only one structural bypass left. A thermal exhaust door, massive enough to vent the planetary shockwave out of the abyss entirely.

Only the architect can draw it.

I pull one of my heavy, trembling human hands away from the console and look back at Leandros. He is staring at me, his face ash-pale, a look of absolute, shattering betrayal carved into his jaw. He thinks I used him. He thinks this was the plan all along.

I open my mouth to demand he draw the door. Then, the logic of the abyss clicks into place, a cold, merciless equation settling in my chest.

The magic of the abyss demands an equal void.

A door large enough to vent a planetary shockwave will not cost a childhood memory. It will cost his most recent, most vital block of cognitive architecture. If Leandros strikes the ash to draw the path that saves the world, the abyss will consume his memory of the entire descent.

It will consume the memory of my hands on his skin. It will consume the memory of his freedom. It will erase me from his mind completely, leaving him with nothing but the image of the cold, untouchable Warden who threw him in a cage.

I hold the power to end the war, but the only mechanism that will let him survive it requires him to forget I ever loved him.
