Where forbidden tales are told.

The island’s mass crushes downward with the weight of a dying planet.

My seventh phantom arm calcifies and detonates into a cloud of glowing shrapnel. The eighth follows a fraction of a second later. The magic of my bloodline is a finite resource, and I am spending the absolute last drops of it to buy the mortal world sixty seconds of air.

Below me, the massive thermal vent Leandros drew roars, equalizing the kinetic pressure of Tartarus. The tectonic scream begins to pitch down. The colossal bronze gears of the execution maze slow their grinding rotation. The system is stabilizing. It is locking into a new geographic reality, no longer functioning as a parasitic cage, but as a natural, venting boundary.

But the final, massive bronze tether above my head drops another three feet.

My last spectral arm—the glowing, marble limb holding the center weight of the hanging island—turns to opaque stone. The pressure limit is breached. It shatters into white dust.

The neurological feedback rips through my spine like a physical blade. I hit the star-iron floor, the breath completely punched from my lungs. Blood pools in my mouth. I stare at my empty shoulders. The cold, absolute authority of the Hecatoncheires is gone. I am completely, irreversibly human. I lie in the ash, waiting for the dark, knowing that the vent is open and he is safe in the light.

The vacuum wind pushes me toward the blinding white shaft of the surface.

I stop at the edge of the threshold. I look at my hands. They are coated in thick silver ash, but my head rings with a terrifying, surgical emptiness. I remember falling from the upper islands. I remember the Warden’s cold, spectral fingers catching me before I hit the magma. Everything after that is a blinding void. I do not know what this massive, shattered room is. I do not know how the vent in the floor opened.

    But I look back.

The terrifying jailer of hell is a broken man lying on the metal floor. The ghostly arms that choked my fellow prisoners in the courtyard are gone. His heavy armor is shredded, and he is bleeding heavily from his ears and mouth. He is just a man who has clearly just held up a mountain with magic he no longer possesses.

The instinct to survive screams at me to walk into the light and never look back.

But I am an architect. I don’t leave people to die in the foundations.

I step away from the sun. I cross the star-iron floor, the physical distance closing rapidly, and drop to my knees beside him. I grab the heavy leather of his harness and haul his shoulders off the ground.

    Human hands grip my chest.

I open my eyes, my vision swimming. Leandros is kneeling over me, ash in his dark hair, his face carved with grim determination. His eyes are sharp, but they are entirely empty of the last five hours. He looks at me exactly the way he looked at me in the courtyard—with defiance and guarded distrust. The memory wipe took everything.

"Why are you here?" I rasp.

"I don’t know," Leandros says, his jaw tight as he drags me backward, resting my spine against the warm crystal of the dormant console. "You caught me when the cliff broke. I’m returning the favor. Then we’re even."

He doesn’t remember the bridge. He doesn’t remember my surrender. He doesn’t remember that he loved me.

But the realization hits my chest with a force heavier than the falling island. Given absolute freedom, an open door, and a clean slate, he still chose to walk back into the dark for me. He didn’t need the memory of our intimacy to save me; his core value as a protector made the choice. The power dynamic is entirely dead. I am not his Warden. I am just the man he chose to pull from the rubble.

He looks at me like I am the only fixed point in a collapsing universe.

I reach out and touch his left shoulder. The air around him is completely still. The oppressive, freezing pressure that always surrounded the Warden is gone. I trace the line of his collarbone with my bare thumb. My mind has no memory of this intimacy, but my body reacts instantly. My pulse steadies. The tension in my shoulders evaporates. The heat of his skin is a perfect, undeniable grounding wire.

I don’t need the missing memories to understand the math of this room. The shattered marble dust around us tells the story. He destroyed his own power to keep the ceiling from crushing me.

My architect’s mind looks at the ruins of the core, and I know we can build something else here. A border. A home. Not a prison.

I lean in, our faces inches apart. "You only have two hands left, jailer," I whisper.

    "It’s enough," I breathe.

I reach up with my human hands and pull him down by the nape of his neck. The kiss is a violent collision of ash and blood. It is entirely different from the desperate, claiming heat of the locked room he forgot. This is an offering. He opens his mouth for me, groaning as I bite his lower lip.

He doesn’t hesitate. He swings his leg over me, straddling my thighs. His calloused hands push my ruined breastplate off my shoulders until the iron clatters to the floor. We are both bare-chested in the cooling air of the abyss. My hands slide down his sides, feeling the heavy, vital rhythm of his breath. He unbuckles my trousers, stripping away the last barriers of leather and cloth.

We are completely exposed on the star-iron floor.

I guide him down. He sinks onto me with a sharp, gasping breath, taking my entire length in one agonizingly slow slide of friction and heat. The sensation is absolute. He sets the pace, riding me with a deliberate, bruising rhythm that demands my total physical surrender. I grip his hips, meeting his thrusts, watching the sweat bead on his collarbone. Every time our bodies slap together, the sound echoes in the vast, empty chamber, a testament to the life we pulled from the wreckage.

"Leandros," I say, my voice breaking under the strain.

He leans down, his chest flush against mine, and kisses me hard. The pleasure spikes—a blinding, suffocating white heat that completely erases the darkness of the pit. I shatter into him with a hoarse cry, my body trembling helplessly beneath his weight as I spill inside him. He follows a second later, his spine bowing rigidly as he comes, collapsing against my neck with a ragged exhale.

We lie tangled together on the warm metal floor, our breathing slowly syncing in the quiet aftermath. Above us, the massive thermal vent frames a perfect, unbroken circle of the open sky. The cage is gone, and the door is wide open.
