Where forbidden tales are told.

The iron bell continues to toll, sending rhythmic, catastrophic shockwaves through the foundations of the dungeon.

With every deafening chime, the absolute authority of San Severo closes in. Tadeo stands paralyzed in the doorway, his massive silhouette blocking the torchlight from the corridor. For the first time since I was dragged into this freezing hell, the High Priest does not have a plan. The fanatical machine he served for decades has just malfunctioned, accelerating my execution to tonight, and he is caught in the gears.

The Tenth Tithe must be pure.

The doctrine echoes in my mind, not as a death sentence, but as a razor-sharp weapon. I look at the heavy, ancient chains on the wall, then at the frantic, terrified eyes of the man who holds the keys.

Valerius built this entire religion on absolute, unyielding rules. A single flaw, a single deviation from the ancient scriptures, and the fanatical masses in the upper courtyards would riot. They believed they were buying salvation with an unblemished vessel.

"They cannot take me," I say, my voice cutting through the ringing in my ears. It is not a plea. It is a calculation.

Tadeo snaps his head toward me, the dark void of his eyes turbulent with panic. "The Abbot’s guard is already assembling at the top of the stairwell, Inés. They will be at this door in less than three minutes to wash you for the altar. I cannot fight an entire garrison."

"You do not have to fight them," I reply, taking a step toward him. The rusted chain at my throat clinks, dropping slack against the freezing stone. "You only have to break the law."

He stares at me, his chest heaving under the thick black wool of his robes. He does not understand. The indoctrination runs too deep.

"Chapter four, verse nine of the Sacrament," I recite, the words tumbling from my lips with cold, desperate precision. I had heard the acolytes chanting it outside my cell for three days. "The vessel must remain untouched by the sins of the flesh. An unblemished lamb, pure in body and spirit, lest the mountain reject the offering and curse the congregation."

Tadeo’s breathing stops entirely. The realization hits him with the force of a physical blow. The color drains completely from his aristocratic features, leaving him looking like a ghost in the blood-red light of the lantern.

"If the vessel is spoiled," I whisper, stepping so close that my bare toes brush the polished leather of his boots, "the ritual is void. Valerius cannot present a tainted sacrifice to a courtyard full of starving zealots. They would tear him apart for insulting the heavens."

"Blasphemy," he chokes out, though the word holds no conviction. It is a reflex, a dying spasm of his broken faith.

    "Survival," I correct him.

The heavy, rhythmic thud of armored boots echoes from the upper levels. They are descending. Two minutes.

I reach up, my bruised fingers curling into the heavy silver embroidery of his collar. I pull him down, forcing him to meet my gaze. "Ruin me, Tadeo. Before they reach that door. Break the vessel so that Valerius has nothing left to offer his false god."

His gloved hands shoot out, gripping my waist with a crushing, desperate force. He hauls me flush against his chest, lifting me onto my toes. The scent of myrrh and male sweat is overwhelming, intoxicating in its intensity. He is trembling—a massive, terrifying man shaking like a leaf in a storm.

"Do you understand what you are asking?" he rasps, his voice a jagged, broken growl against my ear. "If I do this… if I cross this line, I will not be gentle. I will tear down every sacred thing in this room, starting with you. There will be no salvation for either of us. You will be a whore in the eyes of the Sanctum."

"I do not care about the eyes of the Sanctum," I say fiercely, my nails digging into his broad shoulders. I tilt my head back, exposing the fragile, bruised column of my throat to him. "I care about living. And I want it to be you. Claim me, Tadeo. Not to save me, but because I am giving this to you. Make it real."

He searches my eyes, hunting for any trace of hesitation, any flicker of coercion. He needs to know this is a choice, not a surrender.

"Say it," he commands, his voice dropping to a lethal, vibrating pitch. The boots are echoing louder. The stairwell is emptying. "Tell me this is what you want."

"I want you to ruin me," I breathe, pulling his head down. "Now."

A fractured, animalistic sound tears from his throat. The final thread of his restraint snaps, severing him from his god forever.

He crushes his mouth against mine. It is not a kiss of romance; it is a violent, desperate collision of survival and obsession. His teeth clash against my lips, drawing a sharp gasp from my lungs that he immediately swallows. The thick leather of his gloves is rough and bruising as he tears at the collar of my linen shift, the fabric ripping with a loud, final sound in the echoing cell.

The cold of the dungeon vanishes, incinerated by the blistering heat of his body pressing me back against the jagged masonry. His mouth leaves mine, trailing a burning, wet path down my jawline, settling on the sensitive curve of my neck.

"Mine," he snarls against my skin, the word a dark, profane prayer.

He opens his mouth and sinks his teeth directly into the soft flesh where my neck meets my collarbone.

I cry out, a sharp, ragged sound that bounces off the vaulted ceiling. The pain is bright and searing, but it is instantly overwhelmed by a dark, twisting euphoria. He bites down hard, breaking the skin, deliberately scarring the unblemished canvas Valerius demanded. Blood—hot and brilliant—wells up beneath his teeth, smearing across my pale skin and staining the pristine collar of his clerical robes.

He pulls back slightly, his chest heaving, his dark eyes entirely consumed by a feral, possessive madness. He wipes a smear of my blood from his lower lip with the back of his torn glove. The High Priest is dead. The monster has broken his chains.

"Halt! Open the gates!" a voice roars from the corridor, followed by the clanking of heavy iron keys.

Tadeo moves with terrifying speed. He steps in front of me, his broad shoulders completely shielding my torn, bloodied form from the doorway. He drops his head, forcing his breathing to slow, adopting the rigid, immovable posture of the executioner just as the heavy oak door bursts open.

Three armed templars stand in the threshold, torches blazing, carrying the heavy silver manacles meant to drag me to the altar.

"High Priest," the lead templar barks, stepping into the cell. "The Abbot demands the vessel. We are to wash her and bring her to the precipice."

Tadeo does not move. He stands like a dark monolith, the crimson lantern casting long, demonic shadows across his face.

"You are too late," Tadeo states, his voice a flat, dead void that chills the room to absolute zero.

The templar frowns, confused. "Too late? The ritual…"

    Tadeo slowly steps aside.

The torchlight floods the corner of the cell, illuminating me perfectly. I am leaning against the cold stone, my chest heaving. The linen shift is torn violently down the front, exposing my collarbone. And there, stark and undeniably vivid against my pale skin, is the brutal, bleeding mark of teeth. The blood is still fresh, dripping slowly down my chest.

I look at the templars. I do not cower. I lift my chin, a slow, cold smile spreading across my bruised lips.

The lead templar pales, his eyes dropping to the blood, then to the ripped fabric. The silver manacles in his hands suddenly look utterly useless. The strict, unbending logic of their own religion paralyzes him. He knows exactly what he is looking at.

"The vessel is spoiled," Tadeo announces to the horrified guards, his voice ringing with a dark, triumphant finality. "Go tell your Abbot that the Tenth Tithe is utterly ruined."
