Where forbidden tales are told.

The blizzard outside the sanctum walls is a physical assault, a wall of screaming wind and freezing ice that instantly numbs my bare feet.

The templars do not drag me to the execution block in the lower courtyard. They drag me upward, ascending the treacherous, ice-slicked stone steps toward the precipice—the highest point of San Severo. The altar here is not marble. It is a massive slab of jagged black iron protruding over the abyss, slick with the frozen blood of a hundred forgotten sacrifices.

Hundreds of dark-robed zealots encircle the courtyard, their faces obscured by deep cowls. They hold thick beeswax candles, the flickering orange flames struggling against the violent wind. They are silent, watching the ruined vessel being hauled to the slaughter.

Abbot Valerius stands at the head of the iron slab, his white woolen robes immaculate, glowing like a false star in the darkness. He holds his golden thurible, the sweet smoke immediately violently whipped away by the blizzard.

They chain my wrists to the heavy iron rings embedded in the altar. The cold of the metal burns like fire against my raw skin. My torn linen shift offers zero protection against the biting frost, but I refuse to shiver. I refuse to weep. I lock my jaw, tilting my chin up to meet the Abbot’s reptilian gaze. I will not give this dying parasite the satisfaction of my terror. My silence is the only weapon I have left, and I wield it like a shield.

"Behold the rot of our foundation," Valerius preaches, his voice magically carrying over the howling wind, amplified by the sheer acoustics of the mountain walls. He gestures toward the bleeding bite mark on my collarbone. "The vessel is tainted! Corrupted by the very man trusted to guard her purity!"

A collective, horrified gasp ripples through the mass of zealots.

"The heavens demand justice!" Valerius roars, his eyes wide with fanatical theater. "They demand the blood of the traitor!"

Before the congregation can echo his chant, a catastrophic sound shatters the heavy atmosphere.

    CRACK.

The massive timber crossbeam of the western courtyard doors splinters inward.

The zealots turn, their chants dying in their throats. The heavy oak doors shudder violently, then burst open under a catastrophic impact.

A figure steps through the splintered wood, entirely silhouetted by the darkness of the lower halls.

    It is Tadeo.

He is no longer the immaculate High Priest of San Severo. He has been stripped of his heavy black robes, left only in his dark linen undertunic, which is already soaked through with fresh blood. His shoulders are heavily bruised, and the heavy silver manacles meant to hold him in the lower dungeons dangle from his left wrist—the chain violently snapped in half.

In his right hand, he holds a templar’s heavy broadsword, the steel dripping red onto the pristine snow.

"Kill the blasphemer!" Valerius shrieks, pointing a trembling, jewel-encrusted finger at the breached gate.

A dozen elite templars draw their blades and rush across the courtyard.

Tadeo does not speak. He does not utter a single prayer, nor does he shout a war cry. His silence is absolute, terrifying, and completely lethal.

He moves with a brutal, singular purpose. When the first templar strikes, Tadeo sidesteps the heavy halberd, driving his broadsword up and under the guard’s breastplate with horrifying efficiency. He rips the blade free, instantly spinning to shatter the knee of the second attacker with the hilt of his weapon.

This is not a battle of faith. It is a massacre of devotion. Every swing of his blade, every bone he shatters, is a violent rejection of the god he served for a decade. He takes a glancing slash to his left thigh, ignoring the spray of his own blood, just to push forward. He is a man burning down his entire universe to reach the iron slab.

The congregation scatters in absolute panic, screaming as the unstoppable, bloodied ghost of their executioner cleaves a path straight through their armed guard.

Tadeo breaches the inner circle. Two templars guarding the steps of the altar lunge at him simultaneously. Tadeo drops his shoulder, absorbing a shallow cut to his bicep, and uses his massive momentum to throw both men down the icy stone stairs.

    He steps onto the precipice.

Valerius scrambles backward, raising the golden thurible like a pathetic shield, his face twisted in sudden, mortal terror. "Escalante, if you strike me, the mountain will swallow you whole!"

    Tadeo ignores the Abbot entirely.

He drops the bloody broadsword upon the ice. The heavy steel clatters against the stone, the sound ringing out above the howling wind. He crosses the final few paces and collapses directly onto his knees in front of me, his heavy chest heaving, his breath pluming in the freezing air.

He looks up at me. The obsidian void in his eyes is gone, replaced by a raw, devastating vulnerability that breaks my heart in two. The horrific, star-burst scar on his chest is visible through the torn fabric of his tunic, a brutal reminder of the first time he failed.

    He will not fail again.

Without a word, Tadeo reaches into his heavy leather boot. He pulls out the ceremonial black jade blade—the same weapon he had held to my throat in the dungeon just days ago.

He does not cut my chains. He does not turn the weapon toward Valerius.

Instead, he takes my trembling, chained hands in his, forcing the hilt of the black jade into my bruised palms. His large, blood-stained fingers wrap tightly over mine, guiding my hands upward. With agonizing, deliberate pressure, he pulls the razor-thin edge of the freezing jade directly against his own throat, right over his violently beating pulse.

My breath catches in a ragged gasp. "Tadeo, no…"

"Yes," Valerius suddenly laughs, a sharp, hysterical sound that cuts through the blizzard. The Abbot realizes the play. He steps forward, his panic instantly replaced by cruel, opportunistic triumph.

"Look at the fallen priest, offering his neck like a slaughtered pig!" Valerius announces to the remaining, trembling guards. He looks directly at me, his rotting face pulling into a vicious grin. "There is your salvation, little lamb! The true Tenth Tithe! Slay the corrupted priest! Cut his throat upon the iron slab, bleed him for the mountain, and the Sanctum will open its gates. You will walk down this mountain a free woman!"

The cold of the jade blade bites into Tadeo’s skin. A single, dark drop of his blood wells up beneath the black glass, staining the edge.

Tadeo’s dark eyes lock onto mine, intense and pleading. His grip over my hands tightens, urging me to press the blade deeper. He wants me to do it. He is offering me his life to buy my freedom, committing the ultimate, silent grand gesture to ensure my survival, even if it means his damnation.

I stand chained to the altar, my hands trembling violently around the hilt of the weapon.

I look at the bloodied, broken man kneeling before me, begging for death to save me. I look past him, at the rotting tyrant in white robes promising me a hollow, blood-soaked freedom. The wind screams around us, demanding a sacrifice.

I tighten my grip on the jade handle, feeling the immense weight of the choice resting squarely on the edge of the blade.
